Istria (Known locally as Istra) is the most accessible part of Croatia from Western Europe and is the largest Peninsula in the Adriatic Sea. Bordering Slovenia and just a short 20 minutes drive from the Italian city of Trieste, its a triangle of land that cuts out into the Adriatic.
Away from Istria's coast, the land gives way to fields and forests that are punctuated with vineyards and orchards. Many of the towns and villages are perched on hillsides, unaffected by the growth of the tourist industry on the coast. In the north-east Istria is surrounded by the Cicarija and Ucka mountainous regions to add to the man various landscapes possessed by such a unique region.
Along with the fact that it is a multicultural and multi-lingual environment, the uniqueness of Istria lies in the fact that so much diversity is so harmoniously intertwined in such a small place. If Croatia is the heart of Europe, for heart-like Istria it can be said that it opens the gates of the mediterranean to Europeans.
Istria is endowed with natural beauties. Counted among Istria's special qualities without a doubt are its inviolable natural balance and diverse plant and animal world. The environment is well preserved, the forests extend down to the sea which is clean, the majority of beaches are untouched and the plant life is sometimes rare and sometimes unique.
